The Benefits of Massage Therapy for Stress Relief

We live in a world today where everyone is so overwhelmed with stress that it has become very normal for us to live in a constant state of fight or flight. This survival mechanism was originally part of our genetic make up used to protect ourselves from life threatening situations. When we remain in this state for prolonged periods of time, our bodies begin to break down. Our health begins to degenerate. Our muscles become fatigued. Our mental state becomes overloaded and inefficient.

Massage therapy helps to bring calmness back into your life. It allows your body to turn off the survival mechanism and begin to relax. Being in this state of deep relaxation, your body is able to restore homeostasis, the balance that your body constantly strives to maintain. Stress is relieved by increasing circulation to the tissues and organs, freeing tension from constricted muscles, stimulating the parasympathetic nervous system which aids in digestion and stabilizes heart rhythm and breathing patterns. Massage is thought to increase the flow of endorphins which are neurotransmitters in the brain that have pain relieving properties and produce overall feelings of euphoria. When all these systems are working properly, the body is functioning at its optimum level of wellness.

Stress is the number one cause of disease today. Receiving regular massages can greatly benefit your health and well being by reducing stress both physically and psychologically. The more stress you have and the busier you are, the more often you will need massage therapy to help you unwind. Many people get massages weekly, biweekly, or monthly, depending on their individual needs. Considering its profound benefits, massage therapy should be a top priority in your health and wellness routine.

Massage Therapy Awareness Week was developed to increase the public’s knowledge of the benefits of Massage Therapy. In recent years, there has been a steady increase in the number of people who are receiving massage therapy. Most people do enjoy massages although there are some who just aren’t comfortable with being touched. And then there are those who would love to have a massage but feel that it is a luxury and is not necessary for them. We hope to change this belief and place immense recognition on the importance and accountability for one’s own health and well-being.

Healthy Habits is pleased to offer great rewards for the referral of your family and friends so, they too, can experience the healing benefits of massage. During the month of October, we will credit you with $15 towards your next massage for referring someone to our office.

Massage Therapy has been around for thousands of years. As infants and toddlers, it is our natural instinct to place our hands on and rub our bodies wherever it may hurt. As we get older, we tend to forget these natural instincts. Instead, we start to ignore the little bumps and bruises, aches and pains. We don’t even acknowledge there is anything wrong until our body has developed a strong pattern of compensation, eventually leading to de-compensation. We accept this as a natural part of the aging process. We expect to feel bad as we age. To help mask the pain, as it becomes necessary, we put a band aid on it, also known as muscle relaxants or anti-inflammatory drugs. Hopefully, this will prolong the seemingly inevitable doom of surgery.

There is an “alternative” to the commonly accepted aging process. It’s known as self-care. It’s a proactive choice that one makes in taking responsibility for their own health and well-being. It’s a process that includes therapy such as massage, acupuncture, nutrition, exercise, meditation, yoga, pilates, chiropractic, hypnosis, herbal supplements, etc…. The difference in alternative care is that you are making choices regarding your health. You are an active participant in the process while the practitioners are there simply to facilitate your healing. As you become more involved in your own health, you become more aware of your body. You will start to recognize the signs your body is sending you. It’s telling you when you need to take action. You just have to stop and listen. Massage Therapy is a great step forward on this path to wellness.

Himalayan Salt is now available at Healthy Habits Massage Therapy. It is pure, unrefined, unprocessed salt extracted naturally from the foothills of the Himalayan Mountains. It has been shown to have health benefits ranging from improved respiratory function, to promoting balanced blood sugar levels, to decreasing muscle fatigue. Himalayan Salt is a source of 84 essential minerals that are readily absorbed by our cells and are necessary to sustain life.

Himalayan Salt lamps can be used throughout your home or office to improve the overall air quality. This is achieved by the emission of negative ions from the heated lamps. The negative ions bond to pollutants and dander, causing them to be heavier and drop to the ground. They also help to counteract the effect of electronic devices used in your home which can lead to headaches and fatigue. The lamps create a sense of serenity much like breathing in the fresh ocean air.

Using Himalayan Salt in a bath or salt scrub allows the minerals to be absorbed directly into your skin, leaving your skin soft, smooth, and nourished. Blocks of salt can also be used in the bath by allowing it to dissolve and create a solution that you soak in for 30-45 minutes. This will detoxify your body, reduce inflammation, alleviate skin disorders, and improve quality of sleep.

When using Gourmet Himalayan Salt in its raw, natural form, you are nourishing your body with 84 essential minerals necessary to sustain life. It also promotes appropriate absorption of nutrients. Gourmet Himalayan Salt is being used by top chefs throughout the world.

Sole (so-lay) is a physical representation of pure solar and light energy. It is a combination of water and salt that supplies the body with the natural energy stored in the crystals, lasting up to 24 hours. Begin each morning with a teaspoon of sole mixed in with a glass of pure spring water. Benefits of using Sole have been reported to regulate blood pressure and promote vascular health, improve digestion, and boost energy levels.
